Muhurat guide · mid-October 2026 to mid-January 2027
Griha Pravesh muhurat dates: October 2026 to January 2027
There is no Griha Pravesh muhurat in the rest of October 2026: Venus is combust and Chaturmas is still on. Dates open in November. If you follow the strict rule of waiting for Devuthani Ekadashi (Friday 20 November) and stopping at Kharmas (from 16 December), there are seven usable dates: 20, 21, 25 and 26 November and 2–3, 4 and 12 December. After that, the next widely accepted dates come only after mid-January.
Times are Drik Panchang’s windows for New Delhi in IST, checked against our own ephemeris. Nakshatra and tithi changes are the same instant everywhere, but windows that start or end at sunrise move with your city. Before you fix a date, have a priest check the lagna at the moment of entry and your own Moon sign (chandrabalam and tarabalam), which no general list can do.

2 January to mid-January 2027: no dates. Drik Panchang shows no auspicious nakshatra or a barred tithi or weekday from 2 to 7 January, and from 8 January the lunar month (Pausha) is not taken for Griha Pravesh. Kharmas ends when the Sun enters Makara on 14 January.
Why October has no dates
Venus (Shukra) turned retrograde on 3 October and stays retrograde until about 14 November. It passes between the Earth and the Sun around 25 October, when it is lost in the Sun’s glare. Drik Panchang marks Shukra as “old” (vriddha) from 9 to 11 October, combust (asta) from 12 to 28 October and “infant” (bala) from 29 to 31 October, and rules out every day of the month. Chaturmas, the four months when Vishnu is said to sleep, also runs until Devuthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi on 20 November. Jupiter is well clear of the Sun throughout, so it does not remove any dates.
The rules behind the list
- Nakshatras: the fixed and soft stars are preferred: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati.
- Tithis: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi are favoured. Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi), Amavasya and Purnima are avoided.
- Weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are best; Saturday is accepted by many panchangs (including Drik) when the nakshatra is good. Sunday and Tuesday are avoided.
- Months: Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are the classic months; Kartika and Margashirsha are also used. Pausha, and the period when the Sun is in Dhanu (Kharmas, 16 December to 14 January this year), are avoided in most of North India.
- Planets: no Griha Pravesh while Venus or Jupiter is combust (asta), or in the few days of “old” and “infant” Venus around it. Chaturmas (until Devuthani Ekadashi) is traditionally avoided.
Where the sources disagree
- Drik Panchang lists 11 and 14 November, before Devuthani Ekadashi. Its month rule opens on 10 November, but many families and priests still wait until after 20 November because of Chaturmas.
- Drik Panchang also lists 18–19 December, 30 December and 1 January, which fall in Kharmas. Most North Indian panchangs leave Kharmas out completely; we show them but do not recommend them.
- Prokerala’s 2026 list is shorter: 11 November, 20–21 November, 12 December (3:04 to 7:05 AM only) and 23–24 December. It also lists 15 October (1:13 to 4:03 AM, Anuradha) and the night of 23–24 October (Uttara Bhadrapada). Those October dates fall while Venus is combust and in Chaturmas, and Drik Panchang rules them out, so we do not include them. The 23–24 December window is in Kharmas and begins on Purnima, which Drik bars. Prokerala’s list defaults to Ujjain, so its sunrise-based times are a few minutes later than New Delhi’s.
- Some sites leave Venus retrograde (until about 14 November) out of the rules entirely. Drik Panchang does not bar retrograde Venus once it is visible again, which is why 11 and 14 November appear there.
Simple Griha Pravesh steps
- Finish painting, cleaning and electrical work first. Decorate the door with a toran of mango leaves and marigold, and draw a rangoli.
- Enter inside the muhurat with the right foot first. The lady of the house traditionally carries a kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut.
- Do Ganesh puja, then Vastu puja and, if your family does it, a small havan. Boil milk in the new kitchen until it overflows, as a sign of plenty.
- Feed the priest or a few guests, and stay in the house that night.
How these dates were checked
We computed every tithi and nakshatra change from October 2026 to January 2027, the Sun’s entry into Dhanu and Makara, Venus’s stations and the Sun–Venus and Sun–Jupiter angles with a JPL ephemeris and Lahiri ayanamsa, then compared them with Drik Panchang (New Delhi) and Prokerala. Every nakshatra and tithi boundary behind Drik’s windows matches our computation to within two minutes. Drik gives the Sun’s entry into Dhanu as 10:29 AM on 16 December; our simple ayanamsa model gives 10:15 AM, which does not change any date.
